M.L. Lexi’s Good Reads (or Listening) – Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg is a timeless story of a beautiful friendship between two women in the 1980s and their survival against all odds in the small town Whistle Stop, Alabama.

Flagg’s southern charm takes the reader to small-town Alabama and into the Whistle Stop Cafe, where a colourful cast of relatable, quirky characters confront everyday issues with humour.

I came across the movie and watched it before I read the book. While I enjoyed the movie with its excellent cast of actors (Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy), I found the book much better.

Flagg’s characters are endearing, and the story is so heartfelt it makes you wish you had a Whistle Stop Cafe nearby.

Fun fact: The Fried Green Tomatoes script was nominated for both the Academy Award and the Writers Guild of America Award.
